Focusing on the negatives
It is easy to complain, or see all that has and can go wrong in our lives.
Yes, this is a defence mechanism our brains use so as to take record of the bad things we have gone through so that we avoid keep them from happening to us again, scientists say. But also negative emotions generally involve more thinking, and the information is processed more thoroughly than positive ones thus being ingrained in our minds. In the end so many if not most times, we are taken up by all that went wrong, all that can go wrong, and all that will go wrong in our lives. And this life style just drains us.
Why would you be surprised if at the end of the day, you feel so down after reciting and memorising all the negative things going on? Wrong thinking is like a drug, so addictive and dangerous. It attacks the psychological part of you. It is like we enjoy rewinding the negative things that happen to us so that we can feel pity for ourselves and seek attention.
There is always something to be thankful for
If there really is nothing in our lives to be thankful for, at least let us be grateful for the fact that we have a brain that can think about the bad things… so it is up to you to retrain your brain to think positively. See the challenges as a motivation to do better, use them to learn and get stronger. But do not, and do not let them keep you down.
Most times we are not grateful because of our selfish nature, or because we have decided to be negative, or we love to feel pity for ourselves, or even good things have occurred so often, that we learn to take them for granted as they seem the order of the day.
But the choice is ours, we can choose to be grateful for the things that are going right, however small or obvious they might seem. We can choose to go through life with this positive and jolly attitude because it is sure deal, recognising and appreciating good things in our lives gives us energy to move on in this trying world. At the end of every day, you should be able to lie down in that bed and be thankful for your day, because if you don’t, then that day is as good as lost.
