In the Eye of the Storm

FAIRYStorms are part of our lives and every now and then, we shall have to face one crazy big storm. But what do you do when you are in a situation that seems so hopeless? When your tiny boat seems like it will be capsize any moment and send you and all it´s content downing in the raging sea. Who do you turn to in such a situation? When the shore is no where close and there is nothing to hold on to?

Eye (cyclone), a region of mostly calm weather found at the center of strong tropical cyclones. While we are surrounded by the storm, we should endeavour, through trust in Jesus Christ, to come to a place where the storm is on the outside but not on the inside.

Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea[were hushed. They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven. Psalm 107:28-31

When we read the story in Mark 4:35 ff, we see that the disciples found themselves in a storm. While the waves broke over the boat, Jesus was fast asleep. How can someone sleep in a heavy storm? Jesus had a calmness inside of him. He knew that the waves had no power over him. The disciples on the other hand allowed the waves of doubt to over shadow their sight. They woke him up, and he was able to calm the see.

He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves,Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.  He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

 still verse

They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!” Mark 4: 41

Jesus spoke to the sea. How could the sea hear? Not that the lake had any perception but to show that the power of his voice reached the very lake and the elements that were devoid of feeling.  The lordship of Jesus over creation are clearly established in the mind of the disciples. Surely the God who said “let there be light and there was light” is able to say “let there be calm and the sea is calm”. Jesus calmed the storm on the lake and he can calm the storm in your life.

You are strong, Lord

Most time when we find ourselves in a season marked with difficulty, stress, oppression, pain, hurt, our first instinct to to ask God to take it away. The weight of the situation is weighing down on us and our small tiny boat does not seem like it will hold up the waves of the sea much longer.

Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken. Psalms 55:22

Faith is seeing the storm and knowing that the one who is Lord over the storm is able to hold you and keep you strong. We should rely on his great power to sustain us through everything we are going through.

The Lord will fight for you;

We are only able to cast our cares on the Lord if we know what his promises are for our lives. How an we trust him to hold the boat we are in if we do not believe that he is with us amidst this storm. God might not take away the storm but he will keep the storm from taking you over.

When you go through deep waters and great trouble, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown! When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up—the flames will not consume you. (Isaiah 43:2 )

We should not let the reality of the storm fill our minds so much, to the extent that it comes between us and the assurance of Jesus caring for us, causing us to lose sight of Jesus´ word. We should study the word of God and know what his promises over our lives are. So that when we are faced with challenges that seem to be greater than we are, we know that there is someone who is able to see us through.

Do not be afraid;

  1. Faith

It is not until we go through great trouble and challenging situations, that our faith is tested. And when we come out victorious, our faith is made stronger because we know, from experience, that God is able to do all things just like his has promised.

Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. (John 14:1)

2. Perseverance

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds,  because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. James 1:2-3

Going through trouble builds our character. It teachers us to wait on God to do his will in his time. It prepares us for future tests and trials as we come out stronger and ready to face anything with God on our side.

3. Trust

We should learn to trust in the Lord and his will. When we realise we are faced with situations that are beyond our control, we by faith, learn to give it all to God in prayer and trust that out ever the outcome, it will all be for our good.

The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you. Psalms 9:9-10

And we know

So the next time you are in the storm, do not let your heart be dismayed. Let your eyes see the hand of God that is around you. Believe in God´s plan even when you do not understand or even know it yet. Keep a good and stable attitude while in the storm

The very storm that we are facing is an opportunity to discover that Jesus Christ is lord over all. – Alistair Begg

May this be our song in times of trials.

 We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair;  persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. 2 Corinthians 4:8-9
