Worth of Posterity

Worth of PosterityAs times and generations pass by, we find that a lot of thing get lost or left behind. It almost seems like the new generation is always out there to live in defiance. Everything that the older generation stood for, seems to old school and backward. We want to find ourselves. To define ourselves afresh.

Something that’s about to disappear — but worth remembering.

Yet, there are things that are worth carrying on. Things that are so precious and worth treasuring. We stand the risk to lose even these things when we try to put everything the people before us valued in one basket called “no longer useful” Too often thoughts like “this does not actually regard us now”, “things changed”, “that was those days” But before we push everything in the old school box, let us take some time to consider the values worth preserving even in this generation.

One thing that is quickly dying out is the spirit of togetherness. We are not talking about the connection we feel when something really bad happens and all our human instincts to show love are awakened. We are talking about on those  times when nothing extra ordinary happens.

Those are the times we need to relate so that we can connect. We do not need to only remember to engage with our communities and work together only when life forces us to. We should be there for each other just like people in ancient times were.

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil.     ( Ecclesiastes 4:9 )

Respect for older people is something long forgotten. One would argue that how can we respect older people who do not respect themselves? Much as this line of thinking seems justifiable, Respect is something we should not lose, mostly for the people superior to us.

Never speak harshly to an older man, but appeal to him respectfully as you would to your own father. ( Timothy 5:1)

We are warned of  the love of many growing cold in the end times.  Yet this has become the daily experience for so many today. To many people are starving of love, more than we even want to admit. Everyone is searching for love which is becoming harder and harder to get. Yet not many are willing to take that first step to show love. We want to receive first before we give.

The entire Law is fulfilled in a single decree: “Love your neighbour as yourself. (Galatians 5:14)

We need love. No one can survive without love. If we should lose everything we have, love should be the last on the list.  So let us get over ourselves and take that brave step to show love first. For if we live in love, the same is given to us. we get into the lovely love cycle.

There are so many things worth preserving. Values that even now, are already dying out. This is the new definition of Posterity. Behaviours and characteristics that should be passed on to the future generations, yet seemingly endangered.

Do you know of any things that we should learn from the older generation? Things that are worth keeping? Feel free to share with us in the comments below.
